colwick park outdoor adventure centre

In 2005 a new adventure centre for young people at Colwick Country Park was developed to provide a co-ordinated response to activity provision and safety in outdoor education across the city.

The Centre is the principle provider of water based adventure activities and environmental education programmes within Nottingham City, providing access to quality programmes and activities for schools, youth organisations, play groups and the wider community.

In terms of education, the Centre plays an important role in increasing physical activity levels within school (supporting the entitlement to two hours per week of high quality PE) and that of the wider community through informal access to activities and pastimes. The centre is also able to extend the range and delivery of environmental, sustainable, outdoor and adventurous activity within the national curriculum and play an important role in the enriching of the school curriculum.

The centre comprises of office space, a training room, changing area, showers and a large underground storage area for activity equipment. Activities delivered on site are sailing, wind surfing, canoeing and kayaking, raft building, orienteering, mountain biking, problem solving activities, camping and environmental education.

The building is designed as a sustainable resource In keeping with the country park environment. Electricity is generated on site by a small wind turbine and solar panels, rain water collection, storage and filtration is carried out for use in the building. These innovations form a focal point for environmental education packages delivered from Colwick Park.
