42nd Street


 


Act I

1. Overture 'Julian Marsh is doing a show!'

2. Stage of the Forty-Second Street Theatre, New York. Auditions for the new show 'Pretty Lady'. Billy Lawlor and Peggy Sawyer keep Young and Healthy and Dorothy Brock rehearses Shadow Waltz.

3. At the Gypsy Tea Kettle restaurant, Peggy begins to learn the Broadway facts of life and the Girls advise her to Go Into Your Dance.

4. On stage at the Forty-Second Street Theatre, Peggy now in the chorus, interrupts Dorothy in You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me and then faints.

5. In Dorothy's dressing room, Pat Denning, Dorothy's 'Ex', doctors Peggy but Dorothy doesn't like it. Julian doesn't like it either and Abner Dillon, 'Pretty Lady's' Angel doesn't know about it.

6. Back in the rehearsal it's time for Getting Out Of Town to open the show in Philadelphia.

7. The dress rehearsal comes together in the Arch Street Theatre, Philadelphia, with Billy leading Dames and Dorothy has a tantrum.

8. At the party at the Regency Hotel that evening, Dorothy gets drunk and realises that Pat is the only one. Throwing him out again she sings I Know Now which takes us into.....

9. With Billy completing the song as part of the opening night of "Pretty Lady'. This is followed by We're In The Money leading to the big finale of the first act. But Forty-Second Street does not go as planned.

10. At the stage door the doctor confirms that Dorothy's ankle is broken and Julian decides to cancel the show.


ACT II

1. The company in their dressing rooms try to find that Sunny Side To Ev'ry Situation.

2. They suggest to Julian that Peggy Sawyer could play Dorothy's lead role.

3. At Broad Street Station, Philadelphia, Julian and the Company persuade Peggy to listen to the Lullaby Of Broadway.

4. Peggy has to learn all the songs and dances for the opening in New York.

5. In Peggy's dressing room Dorothy gives her some advice About A Quarter To Nine. Julian tells her 'You're going out there a youngster, but you got to come back a star'.

6. Bert Barry and the Girls Shuffle Off To Buffalo and Peggy leads the complete Forty-Second Street.

7. As the celebrations begin, Peggy says goodnight to Mr. Marsh and there is a reprise of Forty-Second Street.
