STUDY SUPPORT
Community Learning in Nottingham
|
Nottingham is home to a diverse mix of minority ethnic
groups. Some have been here for many years while others are more
recent. Each of these groups has its own unique cultural identity
and there is usually a strong desire to pass this on to the next generation,
as well as develop a wide range of literacy skills.
To meet this need,
Nottingham City Council has supported the voluntary sector of Community
Learning Centres, which operate at the weekend or on weekday evenings,
as part of their active policy to develop Study Support within the Out
of Hours Learning available across the City.
Run by volunteers from the
various minority ethnic groups in partnership with the Education Department,
these centres offer language coaching and introduce pupils to their specific
cultural heritage. In most instances, the intention is to work towards
a GCSE in their community language and at some centres there is also
the opportunity to carry on to GCE A Level.
In addition to language study,
one centre offers pupils a course of study leading to a GCSE in Jewish
Studies and there are three centres offering specific support to pupils
from the African-Caribbean communities.
Generally, there is an annual
minimum enrolment fee of £10.
