Written and set in 1977, Howard Brenton’s play was created to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. It is set on Derby Day 1977 and follows the event from dawn to dusk on The Downs at Epsom Racecourse. It is in the tradition of Ben Jonson’s Bartholomew Fair (1614) in that it has over 50 characters from all walks of life reflecting the comings and goings of a grand public event. Whilst the value of the money discussed throughout the play may have changed many of the messages have not.
